Destination BMW Motorrad Days – is your GS worthy of a prize?

21/06/2010

Imagine what sights have been seen from the saddle of BMW GS motorcycles during the past 30 years. Consider the places that have been discovered and explored; jungles and deserts where tourists dare not venture, and other motorcyclists are forced to turn back and admit defeat. Not so for GS riders, as their machines have taken them further into the ‘great unknown’ than any other brand of motorcycle over the past three decades, and many of these iconic GS models are still seen exploring our world today.

As such, a grand competition will be held at this year’s BMW Motorrad Days from 2 to 4 July, and GS owners are invited to bring along their machines, tell their amazing stories and share in the ongoing 30th anniversary celebrations of this inspirational motorcycle model.

BMW Motorrad is looking for customers with the oldest GS; the GS with the highest mileage recorded; and the most impressive looking GS. A panel of judges, including high-profile GS riders such as BMW Dakar winner Hubert Auriol, celebrity GS adventurer Charley Boorman and desert racer Jutta Kleinschmidt will be deciding the winners in the third category, while evidence of chassis numbers and mileage will be required for the first and second categories.

As an added incentive for owners, prizes will be awarded in the form of special vouchers for BMW Rider Equipment. The winner in each category will receive €500, those in second place will receive €250 and the third placed finishers will get vouchers to the value of €100. Furthermore, all entrants placed fifth and above will receive special ’30 YEARS GS’ caps and keyrings, as well as a signed copy of the ‘BMW Classic live. Special edition 30 Years GS’ commemorative publication.

Entering this exciting competition couldn’t be simpler. All owners need to do is turn up at BMW Motorrad Days on their GS and make their way to the designated registration area close to Garmisch-Partenkirchen’s ice rink between 9am and 11am on Saturday 3 July. From there, the judges will decide on the best five machines in each category to progress to the final. These machines will then be paraded (with their owners!) in the Freestyle Arena, after which the winners will be decided and prizes awarded. It’s also worth noting that BMW employees are not allowed to enter this competition, which is exclusively for GS customers.

If you think you have a BMW GS model that deserves to be noticed then please visit www.bmw-motorrad.com/motorraddays for more details. For existing and aspiring GS owners, there will be plenty of other GS-related activities on offer at BMW Motorrad Days, including a special historical GS exhibition, courtesy of BMW Classic, where many of the important machines from the past three decades will be on display in the ‘30 YEARS GS’ tent.

Naturally, the current ‘30 YEARS GS’ model line-up will be on display (while stocks last!) and there’s even a chance to win an F 800 GS and a R 1200 GS from the limited edition ’30 YEARS GS’ range in special prize draws on the Friday and Saturday evenings.

Those that have their heart set on a GS also have the opportunity to try one out over the weekend on the fantastic local roads around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, by reserving a test ride in advance at www.bmw-motorrad.com/testride . There is also the opportunity to take advantage of special training sessions on a purpose-built enduro park at BMW Motorrad Days, which are designed to show just how capable these machines are away from the public highways.

And finally, for those visitors that are unable to realise their dream of a GS right now, BMW Motorrad has produced a special 62-page souvenir magazine (in German and English languages) all about the illustrious history of this iconic model series. It costs just €5 but will surely keep you going until the real thing becomes possible.
