In the past 2-5 years, you’ll have noticed a multitude of innovative technologies and rider aids being fitted to motorcycles. The most common standard features are ABS, Ride Modes and Traction Control; but these technologies aren’t exactly revolutionary or new, after all, they have been fitting them in cars for years now.

One of the most innovative and useful features being offered now on selected BMW models is Hill Start Assist. It’s very similar to the feature you may have in your car. Essentially, it works like this; if you’re stopped on a steep incline, you can release the brake levers and the system will continue to apply just enough line pressure to keep the motorcycle from rolling backwards. This allows you to get both feet firmly on the ground as well as easily manage the throttle for a clean, hassle-free pull away.

Experienced riders might think a feature like this unnecessary. But consider a 604-pound R 1200 RT, loaded with a passenger, a full tank of fuel, and panniers stuffed with camping gear for two, we can be talking about 800 to 1,000 pounds of mass easily. And now come to a stop on a rocky, uphill dirt road with a big drop-off on one side. Suddenly this looks a lot more attractive.

So, you don’t need to buy a new motorcycle to benefit from this technology; certain water-cooled BMW R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure, R 1200 R and R 1200 RS models can be fitted with Hill Start Control from only £216 inclusive of VAT, exclusively at Lind Motorrad.
